Analysis of warm-up effects during avoidance in the Mongolian gerbil
نویسنده
چکیده
Mongolian gerbils were trained under unsignaled free-operant avoidance until performance stabilized. They showed slight warm-up effects, receiving approximately 40% of the total session shocks in the initial one-third of the session. Leverpressing was then studied during l-h extinction periods as a function of the duration of an avoidance period which immediately preceded it. Responding during extinction showed only a small increase as the duration of the avoidance period increased from I to 60 min. The majority of gerbils showed nonsignificant correlations between the number of extinction responses and avoidance time, avoidance responses, and shocks. The results appear to support an explanation of warm-up which emphasizes differences in activation/arousal between domesticated and nondomesticated animals.

Effects of dietary cholesterol in the Mongolian gerbil and the rat: a comparative study.
To come to a better understanding of the diet-induced cholesterol-ester storage in the gerbil liver, the reactions of the gerbil to 0.2% of cholesterol in the diet during 4 weeks were compared with those of the rat consuming the same diet. The major reason for the increased hepatic cholesterol-ester storage in the cholesterol-fed gerbil is the low cholesterol turnover in this species. This cont...
متن کاملAssessing Mongolian gerbil emotional behavior: effects of two shock intensities and response-independent shocks during an extended inhibitory-avoidance task
Despite step-down inhibitory avoidance procedures that have been widely implemented in rats and mice to study learning and emotion phenomena, performance of other species in these tasks has received less attention. The case of the Mongolian gerbil is of relevance considering the discrepancies in the parameters of the step-down protocols implemented, especially the wide range of foot-shock inten...

The purpose of this study was to determine the 50% infective dose for Giardia lamblia (CDC:0284:1) cysts in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The log10 50% infective dose results calculated by probit analysis and the Spearman-Karber method were 2.45 and 2.50, respectively.
متن کاملBilateral ablation of auditory cortex in Mongolian gerbil affects discrimination of frequency modulated tones but not of pure tones.
This study examines the role of auditory cortex in the Mongolian gerbil in differential conditioning to pure tones and to linearly frequency-modulated (FM) tones by analyzing the effects of bilateral auditory cortex ablation. Learning behavior and performance were studied in a GO/NO-GO task aiming at avoidance of a mild foot shock by crossing a hurdle in a two-way shuttle box. Hurdle crossing a...
